Mike Walker founded The Walker Law Group in St. Petersburg, Florida, and is entering his 35th year of practicing law. He's board certified in civil trial by both the Florida Bar and the National Board of Trial Advocates — a distinction that puts him in a small group of Florida attorneys who've met that standard.

From a Factory Worker's Son to a Trial Lawyer

Mike is the son of a factory worker and the first in his extended family — aunts, uncles, cousins included — to go to college, let alone law school. Coming from a family of farmers and factory workers, he grew up thinking lawyers were for wealthy people. He watched people he knew get told their problems weren't "big" enough to justify an expensive lawyer, or were too big to even consider the cost. Justice didn't seem available to people like him. A push from his business law professor at Purdue is what actually started him on the path.

Mike never had ambitions of being a "corporate" lawyer. He was compelled by people problems — he wanted to help people. In law school, he learned about torts, a field built on fairness and reasonableness, two concepts he'd always tried to live by. It was a natural fit. He chose Stetson University for law school without fully appreciating its national reputation for advocacy — Stetson is regularly ranked among the top trial programs in the country by U.S. News. That's where he found his way into trial work specifically.

Still today, people who meet Mike, in his practice or in his free time, tell him he doesn't seem like a lawyer. He takes that as a compliment.

Licensed Across State Lines

Mike's home county is Pinellas, but attorneys across Florida regularly ask him to assist with litigation and trials for their own clients, and he routinely travels to Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Fort Myers, Sarasota, Jacksonville, and Orlando when a case calls for it. He holds active law licenses in Florida, Illinois, Indiana, and Minnesota, and has been admitted for individual cases in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Mississippi, New York, Texas, Kentucky, and Ohio.

How Mike Leads the Firm

As meaningful as the awards and credentials are, what matters more to Mike is how clients and everyone else who encounters The Walker Law Group are treated. Trial law means conflict — insurance adjusters, opposing lawyers, opposing experts, sometimes judges, sometimes even clients. Mike sees it as part of his job to lead by example, to live by the Golden Rule, and to instill that same standard in the rest of the team. Helping someone through a life crisis, big or small, takes empathy and sensitivity. The goal is always relief for the client — relief that comes from legal skill and experience, but also from simply recognizing what someone is actually going through.

Staying Ahead of How Trials Actually Work

Even entering his 35th year of practicing law, Mike stays open to new legal trends, technology, and communication strategies. As a trial lawyer, he's always looking for better ways to communicate and persuade a jury. One recent example: remote testimony, which became common practice after the pandemic. It sounds simple — put a witness in front of a camera — but the reality involves real complications, from persuasiveness compared to live testimony to the logistics of handling exhibits remotely. Mike learns these details the way most trial lawyers do: through experience.

Life Outside the Courtroom

Mike lives in south St. Petersburg with his wife, Alva, and their three dogs. Outside the office, he stays active with fitness, collects mid-century furniture, and spends time outdoors enjoying the Florida sunshine.
